An Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro 2023 Review

The iPad Magic Keyboard is a keyboard accessory designed specifically for Apple's iPad Pro lineup. It was first introduced by Apple in March 2020 as part of their ongoing efforts to position the iPad Pro as a viable laptop replacement for certain users.

Now, there's one thing I absolutely dislike about this keyboard. The moment I place the iPad over the keyboard, it instantly aligns itself to the case. It’s a satisfying feeling, like when a DVD used to hit the corner just right. But let's get into the nitty-gritty.

First off, the build quality is top-notch. You're paying that Apple tax, but it's worth it. The hard plastic material is fantastic because, we tend to be a bit careless with our iPads. Unlike its competitors, it won't soak up water if you spill something on it, thus, leading to a terrible smell.

The trackpad at the bottom is undeniably one of the best out there. As a Mac user, I appreciate that most gestures work similarly to what I'm used to on my computer. It speeds up my workflow on the iPad.

Now, let's talk about those scissor switches. I'm not disappointed at all. They're clicky and responsive, making typing a breeze. I don't use the backlit keyboard often, but when I do, my iPad takes a hit in battery life. I saw maybe a 5-10% person drop in my everyday use at a much faster rate.

There's an extra USB-C dongle, making it feel more like a computer. You'll need one for charging and another for using an external hard drive, but that's a topic for another iPad review.

One downside is the limited angles for typing. You've got three options, which isn't as versatile as a laptop. On the plus side, the weight distribution is excellent. It feels substantial, and you could definitely hurt someone with it.

Speaking of weight, you can lean back in a chair and rest your palm on the corner without any issues. This keyboard does that better than others.

But here's my major gripe: there's no little flap to hold the Apple Pencil. It just flops around, and that's a deal-breaker for me. My favorite Spigen case does this at a fraction of the cost. Without this little flap, you can bet yourself losing the pencil in your backpack, office, and couch. A very small but important detail.

Another thing to note is the lack of function keys. It's weird not having them within easy reach, and I hope they add them in the next generation. Maybe throw in an extra USB-C port while they're at it.

In summary, the iPad Magic Keyboard is a keyboard accessory with a built-in trackpad that was introduced by Apple in March 2020. It aimed to enhance the productivity and versatility of the iPad Pro, blurring the lines between tablet and laptop functionality. Its design, keyboard quality, and trackpad integration marked a significant evolution in the iPad's capabilities for users who wanted a more laptop-like experience.
